Birthday Remix

Coach Washington started a new Lady Lion Tradition when she arrived in Happy Valley five years ago.  We want to make everyone feel special on their birthday.  At the beginning of practice, we invite the birthday person to stand in the middle of the circle and the team sings to them.  We start off with the standard Happy Birthday song and then we add the Lady Lion remix version.  Here is the most exciting part!  When the remix version starts, the person in middle must dance.  Some of the players take this dance thing very seriously.  Maggie and Talia put a lot of thought and choreography into their dances, while others just wing it (me).  Everyone is always guaranteed a good laugh to start practice and we really l look forward to the dancing part.

Tuesday was Coach Washington’s birthday.  The staff worked all day to organize our recording efforts because we were determined to get this dance on film.  Coach Washington tries to abuse her power and veto her obligation to perform a birthday dance.  She tried it yesterday but the players held strong.  How do I describe the birthday dance?  The dance was part shimmy, tug at the ear and a tribute to Michael Jackson.  I believe the footage can be found on the Lady Lion Facebook page.  I hope you enjoy the 2-3 minutes of laughter!  If you watch the birthday dance, then please do not mention it to Coach Washington.   Instead, just greet her with the biggest grin you can muster!
