Me & Dr. J

This summer for a couple of weeks, I am working as a camp counselor for one of my former high school coaches. I have attended this camp as a camper since elementary school and have worked it for five years now. The camp is a lot of fun to work but it has had some perks along with it that I couldn't believe. The first cool thing I got to experience was meeting NBA players and Harlem Globetrotters when I was camper. Now as a counselor, the camp joined together with Eric Snow, a former NBA player, who helps run the program. Meeting him was awesome and I love him and his family. They are great and his kids make camp very interesting.

This year, I not only was a counselor to Eric Snow's kids but also Dr. J's kids (yes, THAT Dr. J)! I knew that they would be there but I never thought I would get to meet Dr. J. One morning before camp he stopped in and I waited about five minutes until I walked right up to him and said, "Hi, my name is Tori Waldner." He was extremely nice and shook my hand, his hands were so big and went to my forearm I swear. A few minutes later he was acting like he was posting me up and did a move of his, he initiated talking to me and was always sure to say hello whenever I saw him after that. He was pretty funny and extremely down to Earth. I told him he had to watch the Lady Lions games next season with my former coach and his nephew, who I also met there. He agreed! I told him how Coach Coquese looked up to him when she played and he asked about us and our program but other than that, I can't remember what was said, because I was just so excited and had to try and seem cool about it all. haha.

I am emailing our schedule to him and hopefully his schedule permits him to watch! The experience was awesome and I wish I could have had a long conversation but then again, I had to work, I am so not looking forward to the real world when work isn't just teaching or playing basketball but I am definitely appreciative of the opportunities I have had. smile

Very cool. I love hearing about the team’s off-court experiences. It’s nice to see that all the dedication and hard work has collateral benefits. Enjoy the rest of your summer!  ~TH

Well it sounds like you kept your cool to me. Way to go Tori. I’m sure he enjoyed talking to you just as much. Way to represent the Lady Lions.
